In a shocking tragedy, the peaceful Himalayan village of Dharali (also called Uttara Kund) in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, was hit by a massive flash flood on August 5, 2025. What began as a normal day turned into a nightmare as a sudden cloudburst unleashed devastating floods that swept away homes, shops, hotels, and even parts of an army camp.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), a cloudburst occurred over the Kheerganga river catchment area near Harsil, leading to a sudden rise in water levels. The surging water, loaded with mud, rocks, and debris, came crashing into Dharali village, demolishing everything in its path.
Residents recall how within minutes, their homes, markets, and hotels were swallowed by the raging waters. Entire families were trapped. Vehicles were carried away as if they were toys. The scenic beauty of Dharali turned into a disaster zone in a blink.

Rescue teams from the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, and ITBP reached the site swiftly. Despite blocked roads, broken bridges, and communication failures, rescuers managed to save over 130 people trapped in the debris.
Helicopters have been deployed to search for missing persons. Drones and sniffer dogs are assisting the ground teams. Yet, the ongoing rain and landslides are making rescue operations extremely difficult.
