Uttar Pradesh is battling a serious flood situation due to continuous heavy rainfall across the state. Over the past few days, relentless downpours have caused major rivers to overflow, flooding cities, villages, and farmlands. The government and disaster teams are working day and night to control the situation and provide relief to affected people.

What’s Happening Across Uttar Pradesh?
Since August 1, many regions of Uttar Pradesh have been receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for multiple districts including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Bareilly, and Gorakhpur.
Rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Saryu, Rapti, and Ghaghra are flowing close to danger marks. Several embankments have been weakened, raising concerns of further breaches and waterlogging.

Major Affected Areas
- Lucknow: The city recorded its heaviest August rainfall since 2018. Roads are waterlogged, schools were shut down, and several residential colonies are flooded.
- Ayodhya: The Saryu River has breached its banks, submerging Jalwanpura and nearby villages. Locals are using boats to navigate flooded streets.
- Varanasi: Boat services on the Ganga River have been suspended as water levels rise dangerously. Schools remain closed and areas near the ghats are under water.
- Prayagraj & Kanpur: Both cities are on flood alert as rivers continue to rise. Low-lying regions are witnessing heavy water accumulation.
Government’s Response & Rescue Operations
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has activated a Team-11 task force comprising ministers and senior officials to monitor relief efforts in flood-affected districts. The administration is operating relief camps, distributing food packets, and deploying rescue boats to help stranded families.
Special teams from NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and PAC (Provincial Armed Constabulary) have been sent to high-risk areas. Over 1,200 boats have been put into service for rescue missions.
Medical teams are on standby to prevent waterborne diseases, and clean drinking water supplies are being distributed in affected zones.
Weather Forecast: More Rains Expected
According to IMD forecasts, heavy rains are expected to continue till August 6. While the intensity may reduce after this period, eastern UP may face another wet spell from August 11 due to a new weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal.
Human & Economic Impact
So far, more than 1.7 lakh people have been affected across 21 districts. Thousands have been evacuated to safer locations, and relief camps are housing displaced families.
Farmers are facing double trouble — earlier they dealt with delayed monsoon showers, and now their standing Kharif crops are at risk of being destroyed by floods.
Urban life has been severely affected, with traffic jams, power outages, and disrupted transport services making daily life difficult.
